Don't Want To Fool Myself

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.

—James 1:26 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Save me from the hypocrisy of claiming to be spiritually mature when my unbridled tongue tells another story.

Show me how to control my tongue—by helping me to die to my self-centered thoughts and motivations and allow You to have control of my heart.

And help me to understand that this immeasurable love You have for me is the same love You have for everyone—for each one who was created in Your image.

For only then can I allow Your love for others to flow like a relentless river through my heart—and only then will my words bring honor and glory to You.

So, keep me far from any tendency to gossip about, or put someone down and help me to walk humbly before You—rather than to be boastful and arrogant.

Keep me from speaking manipulative words, exaggerations, or lies of any kind—but rather, help me to speak the truth in love.

Keep me from speaking negatively—but rather, help me to seek first to speak words that build up the one who hears them.

By Your Holy Spirit, alive and at work in me, help me to speak loving words that sow seeds of peace in the hearts and lives of those that hear—so that I might represent You well and so You might use me to draw others to a closer walk with You.

Save me from the hypocrisy of claiming to be spiritually mature when my unbridled tongue tells another story.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
