The Straight Path, The Safe Path

Guard your heart above all else,
    for it determines the course of your life.
Avoid all perverse talk;
    stay away from corrupt speech.
Look straight ahead,
    and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
Mark out a straight path for your feet;
    stay on the safe path.
Don’t get sidetracked;
    keep your feet from following evil.

—Proverbs 4:23-27 (NLT)

Gracious God,

Strengthen me to do my part—through my obedience to Your commands and instructions—to achieve victory over the temptations that come against me every day, so that my life would bring glory to You.

Help me to guard my heart—to ensure that any thought that I allow to remain in my heart is true, and pure, and God-honoring—because what flows from my heart will determine the course of my entire life.

Help me to watch what I say—never underestimating the power of the words that come out of my mouth—that I might only speak things that are good and true, all the while reflecting the love and grace and compassion of Christ.

Help me to be careful what I allow myself to look at—to keep myself from gazing lustfully at this world and its great darkness—so that my whole body would remain full of the light of Christ and I might shine as a beacon for Him.

Help me to be mindful of where I go—to not put myself in places where I will be overly tempted and always be ready to run away from wrong places that I might unintentionally find myself—so that my path will be the safe path, the straight path, the path that always leads me home to You.

Strengthen me to do my part—through my obedience to Your commands and instructions—to achieve victory over the temptations that come against me every day, so that my life would bring glory to You.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
