Just a Moment, But a Breath

“LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.
Remind me that my days are numbered—
    how fleeting my life is.
You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.
    My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;
at best, each of us is but a breath.”

 —Psalm 39:4-5 (NLT)

Infinite LORD,

Help me to be willing to accept every invitation that You extend to me to be a part of what You are doing in the lives of those around me, so that my brief life here—while little more than a single breath—will shout to Your glory, honor and praise!

Help me to use the time that has been given to me in a way that honors You. Don’t let me allow apathy, complacency, or fear to hold me back from moving boldly forward with the things that You have given me to do.

But at the same time, help me to remember to wait for You, to never run ahead of You. Since any good thing I do requires me to be completely dependent on You, help me to take every step of my life’s journey in concert with You.

Help me to live each moment in trust and obedience, by faith—so I can enjoy Your presence and rest in Your peace, unencumbered by my past failures or any of the uncertainties of my future.

Help me to be willing to accept every invitation that You extend to me to be a part of what You are doing in the lives of those around me, so that my brief life here—while little more than a single breath—will shout to Your glory, honor and praise!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Deep Waters

When you go through deep waters,
    I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty,
    you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression,
    you will not be burned up;
the flames will not consume you.

     —Isaiah 43:2 (NLT)

Loving LORD,

You are the One who is always with me—for you have placed Your loving affection upon me! You take each step of this life with me and are always faithful—never letting go of my hand—so that I never walk alone!

When I feel as if I am in too deep, like I am no longer able to touch bottom, and am drowning in my troubles, You are there to give me my next breath and to help me to regain my footing once again.

When I feel as if I am going to be swept away by the raging currents around me—the tides of evil that come against me—You are there to help me stand firm and to discover that You are my refuge and strength.

When I feel the burning oppression of the enemy seeking to consume my very soul, You are there to shield me in Your loving arms—to remind me of who I am, and assure me of Your immeasurable love for me, so that I can continue to walk with You through every attack, in victory.

You are the One who is always with me—for you have placed Your loving affection upon me! You take each step of this life with me and are always faithful—never letting go of my hand—so that I never walk alone!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

He Hears!

I love the LORD because he hears my voice

    and my prayer for mercy.

Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!

—Psalm 116:1-2 (NLT)

Merciful and Loving LORD,

I love You, LORD! For You are the One who bends down to listen, who hears my prayers for mercy!

In a world where so many are speaking but so few are listening, let my comfort and hope be found in the truth that You are always interested in what is on my heart.

For You are my Heavenly Father and You bend down to listen to me—not willing to miss a single word I pray—because I am Your dearly loved child.

So, help me to make every next breath I breathe a prayer lifted up to You—from a heart that is filled with love for You—knowing You will hear me and answer me according to what is best for me and for Your glory!

I love You, LORD! For You are the One who bends down to listen, who hears my prayers for mercy!

The Breath of the Almighty

“The Spirit of God has made me,
and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

—Job 33:4 (ESV)

Almighty God,

May I never take for granted that it is Your Spirit that has made me and Your breath that gives me life.

Your Spirit has made me according to Your image. I bear the imprint of You, Father God, upon my spirit!

You—the same God that breathed out the stars and galaxies—are the God that breathed life into me. By Your Word and by Your Spirit my life is sustained with every breath You give to me.

You fill my lungs and fill my heart, so that I might continually give praise and thanks to You—the Giver of all good things!

May I never take for granted that it is Your Spirit that has made me and Your breath that gives me life.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

The LORD Hears My Voice

I love the L
ORD because he hears my voice
    and my prayer for mercy.

Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!

—Psalm 116:1-2 (NLT)

Merciful and Loving LORD,

I love You, LORD! Thank You for bending down—for listening for me to cry out to You—and for hearing my prayer for mercy!

Never let me forget that You have heard, and will continue to hear, every word that I pray—for You are always faithfully and carefully listening to my cries for help.

In a world where so many are speaking, but so few are listening, let my comfort and hope be found in the truth that You are always interested in what is on my heart.

For You are like that good Father who sits on the edge of his chair and bends low to listen to his dearly loved child—not willing to miss a single word he has to say.

So, help me to make every next breath I breathe a prayer lifted up to You—from a heart that is filled with love for You—knowing You will hear me and answer me according to what is best for me and for Your glory!

I love You, LORD! Thank You for bending down—for listening for me to cry out to You—and for hearing my prayer for mercy!

Sing to the LORD

I will sing to the L
ORD as long as I live.
I will praise my God to my last breath!

May all my thoughts be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the L
ORD.

Psalm 104:33-34 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Oh, that all my thoughts would be pleasing to You—that You would be the source of all my joy and the object of all my praise, for as long as I live!

Give me a strong voice, so l can continually lift up songs of praise and worship to You—for as long as You put breath in my lungs.

Give me a pure heart—a heart that is motivated only by my love for You and for others—so that my every thought would please you, causing all my words and actions to bring You glory.

Give me a rejoicing spirit—so that the light of joy that shines from within me would be the Light of Christ.

Oh, that all my thoughts would be pleasing to You—that You would be the source of all my joy and the object of all my praise, for as long as I live!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Each of Us is But a Breath

“LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.

You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.
    My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;

—Psalm 39:4-5 (NLT)

Infinite LORD,

Help me to watch for—and willingly and obediently respond to—every invitation that You extend to me to be a part of what You are doing in the lives of those around me, so that my brief life here—while little more than a single breath—will shout to Your glory, honor and praise!

Help me to use the time that has been given to me in a way that honors You!  Don’t allow my apathy, complacency, or fear—which comes from my failure to believe that You keep Your promises—hold me back from moving boldly forward with the things that You have given me to do.

And, at the same time, help me to remember to wait for You—to not run ahead of You—since everything good thing I do, demands that I remain completely dependent on You, walking every step of the way with You.

Help me to live each moment that You give me by faith, enjoying Your presence, and resting in Your peace—unencumbered by my past failures or the uncertainty of my future—so that my brief life here might be used for Your glorious purposes.

Help me to watch for—and willingly and obediently respond to—every invitation that You extend to me to be a part of what You are doing in the lives of those around me, so that my brief life here—while little more than a single breath—will shout to Your glory, honor and praise!
