Childlike

“I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”

—Mark 10:15 (NLT)

Loving Father God,

Teach me how to come to You like a child, that I might enter into all that You have for me—both in the here-and-now, and for all eternity to come.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike humility—knowing that I have only my heart to offer You and that I can do no good thing apart from You.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike dependence—knowing I am helpless and hopeless without You, but that even still, I can find my help and hope in You.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike inquisitiveness—that I might gain knowledge, grow in wisdom, and leave behind my foolish ways.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike faith—asking confidently for Your best for me and believing You will give me every good thing You have for me.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike obedience—willingly going and doing that which You require of me, knowing You always have my best interests at heart.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike gratefulness—giving thanks and rejoicing in all situations for all Your goodness, knowing You work all things together for my good.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike love—a love that is purely motivated and freely offered, just because of who You are.

Teach me how to come to You like a child—that I might enter into all that You have for me, both in the here-and-now, and for all eternity to come.

Our Present Troubles

That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!

2 Corinthians 4:16-17 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Renew me once again today, so that I won’t be tempted to give up!

Help me to draw on the power of Your Holy Spirit within me, to renew my strength, so I can boldly face what lies before me today.

Remind me that though my body has been aging since the day I was born, You cause me to be renewed in the inner man of my spirit—so that I can find new life in You, discover more about who You are, and become more like You every day.

Show me how to trust and hope in You, for I know the temporary troubles that I face, You will use for my good—to mold and fashion me into the person that You want me to be, for Your glory.

Grant me the humility to accept my human limitations, recognize my dependence on You, and to take my eyes off my troubles long enough to see You—for it is only by Your great power that I am saved me out of them all!

And help me to embrace each moment of the life You have given me and walk in the joy and peace that You have called me into—until You call me home to be forever with You in glory.

Renew me once again today, so that I won’t be tempted to give up!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Far Beyond

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine."

—Isaiah 55:8 (NLT)

Sovereign LORD,

How limited I am in my understanding—and yet, how gracious You are to show me things I could never come to understand on my own!

You are the Sovereign LORD—my infinitely powerful, infinitely present, infinitely wise, infinitely loving, Heavenly Father. How foolish it would be for me to depend on my own understanding, when Your thoughts reach infinitely further than mine!

Help me understand that I cannot ever fully understand Your thoughts and Your ways, because of the finite limits of my mind. My thinking can be distorted by the ongoing assault of the enemy’s lies, so help me remember that I am totally dependent on You to lead me into all Truth.

Draw me close and teach me to pursue a more personal and intimate relationship with You always—so I might learn to trust more completely in Your love for me and Your absolute knowledge of, and provision for, everything that I need to accomplish Your will and purpose for me.

How limited I am in my understanding—and yet, how gracious You are to show me things I could never come to understand on my own!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

All Who Call Upon Him

The L
ORD is near to all who call upon Him,
To all who call upon Him in truth.
He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;
He will also hear their cry and will save them.

—Psalm 145:18-19 (NASB)

Faithful and Loving LORD,

What an amazing comfort to know that You are near, that You hear us when we call on You in truth, that You fulfill our desire when we fear You, and save us in every way!

May my response to Your promised nearness be to call upon You in truth—that is to call upon You from a clean, sincere, and devoted heart, a heart that beats after Your own heart.

May my response to Your promise to fulfill my desire be to fear You—that is to praise, worship, and serve only You, in holy awe of all You are and all You have done, so that my greatest desire is to know You and to make You known.

May my response to Your promise to hear me and save me be to cry out to You with confidence—that is to recognize my total dependence on You and find my hope in Your faithfulness to all Your promises.

What an amazing comfort to know that You are near, that You hear us when we call on You in truth, that You fulfill our desire when we fear You, and save us in every way!

Secret Things, Things Revealed

The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

Deuteronomy 29:29 (NIV)

Infinite and All-knowing God,

Help me to use my time wisely, to become submitted and obedient to do those things that You have asked me to do—as revealed to me through Your Word and by Your Holy Spirit—trusting that You will show me everything I need to know, in order to accomplish Your Will for me.

In Your infinite wisdom You have chosen to make me finite in my ability to comprehend and understand the secret wonders of all that You are—and of all that You have done, are doing, and have yet to bring to pass—so that my dependence would be on You alone.

Teach me that, even though You have not revealed to me everything there is to know, I am responsible for everything that You have shown me—and that any disobedience in me is an act of my own rebellious will, and not because I lack the knowledge I need to obey.

Help me to rest in the assurance that I serve an infinite and all-knowing God who loves and wants me—a God who is in control over everything and has revealed all the Truth that I will ever need to believe Him, to obey Him, and to see His salvation in my life.

Help me to use my time wisely, to become submitted and obedient to do those things that You have asked me to do—as revealed to me through Your Word and by Your Holy Spirit—trusting that You will show me everything I need to know, in order to accomplish Your Will for me.

Trust . . . With All Your Heart

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

Sovereign and Loving LORD,

May I always trust You with all my heart, so that I do not rely on my own understanding but seek Your will in all that I do—knowing You will show me the path I should take.

Help me to lean only on You—to trust You completely, and to remain confident that You have great plans for me—as I commit my love and surrender my life to You.

Help me not to depend on my own limited insights or understanding of things, but rather to put my trust in Your unlimited wisdom and understanding—always confident that You love me and always want what is best for me.

Help me understand that as I choose to trust You—more than I trust myself—You will show me what I should do and will remove every obstacle from my path, and bring me to that place where You have called me to live in Christ.

May I always trust You with all my heart, so that I do not rely on my own understanding but seek Your will in all that I do—knowing You will show me the path I should take.

Each of Us is But a Breath

“L
ORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.
Remind me that my days are numbered—
    how fleeting my life is.
You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.
    My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;
at best, each of us is but a breath.”

 —Psalm 39:4-5 (NLT)

Infinite LORD,

Help me to be willing to accept every invitation that You extend to me to be a part of what You are doing in the lives of those around me, so that my brief life here—while little more than a single breath—will shout to Your glory, honor and praise!

Help me to use the time that has been given to me in a way that honors You. Don’t let me allow apathy, complacency, or fear to hold me back from moving boldly forward with the things that You have given me to do.

But at the same time, help me to remember to wait for You, to never run ahead of You. Since any good thing I do requires me to be completely dependent on You, help me to take every step of my life’s journey in concert with You.

Help me to live each moment in trust and obedience, by faith—so I can enjoy Your presence and rest in Your peace, unencumbered by my past failures or any of the uncertainties of my future.

Help me to be willing to accept every invitation that You extend to me to be a part of what You are doing in the lives of those around me, so that my brief life here—while little more than a single breath—will shout to Your glory, honor and praise!
