The One and Only God of My Life

“You shall have no other gods before Me.”

—Exodus 20:3 (NKJV)

O LORD My God,

Be for me the One and Only God of my life.  For there is no other god—whether person or thing—worthy of my worship!

Help me never to put another person, place, or thing before my love and worship of You, as my God.  May that place in my heart and life be exclusively Yours!

Keep me from making gods of anything or anyone in this world that I might value or set my love upon, fear or submit to, delight in or depend on, other than You.  For without You I have nothing—and I am nothing.

Don’t allow my foolish pride to cause me to make a god of myself, a desire for wealth or possessions to make money a god in my eyes, a desire for position or authority to make power a god I would worship, or a desire to enjoy life to make pleasure a god that I would follow.

May my identity, purpose, source of security, and hope only be found in You—my God—as I submit myself completely to Your loving care, and fear no other.

Be for me the One and Only God of my life.  For there is no other god—whether person or thing—worthy of my worship!

Let This Breath Bring Glory to You, Lord!

“You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.
    My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;
    at best, each of us is but a breath.”           Interlude.

We are merely moving shadows,
    and all our busy rushing ends in nothing.
We heap up wealth,
    not knowing who will spend it.

And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?
    My only hope is in you.

Heavenly Father,

Let this breath, which is my life, be an unhurried one—as I truly place my hope in You alone!

Let this moment, which is my short life here on earth, count for something more than just a breath of frantic rushing around—of trying to accomplish worldly goals which, in the end, make little difference at all.

And don’t let me spend the little time I am given here just trying to accumulate money or possessions—only to lose it all to someone else in the end.

Rather, let me walk with You—peacefully unhurried through my life here on earth, submitting my will to Yours, so that when You want to interrupt my plans with that which really matters, I will hear You, obey, and walk in Your purposes.

Let me live with the understanding of this truth: Only those things that I do for Your glory—those things that You invite me to join with You in doing—will last for eternity.

Let this breath, which is my life, be an unhurried one—as I truly place my hope in You alone!

That Breath Which is my Life
