Giving Purely

When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.

But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

—Matthew 6:2-5 (NLT)

Giver of all good things,

Help me to give from a pure heart, untainted by wrong motives.

Just like in times long ago, there are many today who give in order to draw attention to their selves—hoping to receive the approval of others, or worse, to manipulate others for their own advantage.

But, I don’t want to be that kind of person.

I want always to keep watch over my motives—by making sure that even if no one ever found out what I had done, I would still have willingly done it with just as much joy, in grateful response to Your love for me.

Help me to not be self-centered, seeking to make myself look good—but rather help me be centered on allowing You to work through me so that others will see how good You are and give You all the glory.

Keep me from hollow motives which lead to empty rewards—but rather help me to look to the joy I receive now in serving You from my whole heart, here on earth, and the eternal rewards waiting for me of life with You forever, in Heaven.

Help me to give from a pure heart, untainted by wrong motives.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
