Throwing Out the Garbage in Order to Gain Christ

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.  For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ.  For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

—Philippians 3:8-9 (NLT)

God of Mercy and Grace,

Help me to discard—as I would garbage—anything and everything in my life that is a barrier which prevents me from fully embracing Christ Jesus as my Lord, becoming one with Him, and being made right with You, through my faith in Him.

Remind me, that for me, there should be no greater pursuit than the pursuit of my faith in Christ—that I might know Him and experience His power at work in me to make me more like Him.

Help me to hold very lightly to those things with which I have been blessed, so that if they were taken away from me today, I would still find everything that I need in Christ—in whom my joy remains complete.

Forgive me for those times when my focus turns away from You and onto things I think I need—and help me remember that You will supply everything that I truly need, when I first seek Christ in my life.

Let my total dependence be on Christ, since I know that in all my striving I can never be made right with You in my own strength—for it is only found in Your grace extended to me through Christ, as I simply receive it by faith.

Help me to discard—as I would garbage—anything and everything in my life that is a barrier which prevents me from fully embracing Christ Jesus as my Lord, becoming one with Him, and being made right with You, through my faith in Him.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
