The Essence of All

“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”

—Matthew 7:12 (NLT)

Dear Heavenly Father,

Help me to prove my love for You, by loving others in the same way that I would want to be loved—in the same way that I have been loved by You.

Help me to see that how I want others to treat me goes far beyond merely wanting them to refrain from hurting me. Help me to recognize how much I desire to be truly seen and not ignored, heard and well understood, and sincerely loved despite all my failures and shortcomings—as evidenced by what others say to me and about me, and by their actions toward me.

Then, help me always look for opportunities to actively do those good things for others, just as I would want them to do for me—with the pure motive of a sincere heart that wants what You want for all Your children.

Just as You have poured over me Your immeasurable love, according to Your patience, compassion, kindness, goodness, gentleness, mercy, and grace, let me pour out all these things on others—as You empower me by Your Spirit to fulfill the law of Christ.

Help me to prove my love for You, by loving others in the same way that I would want to be loved—in the same way that I have been loved by You.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

For the Good of Others

Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.

—1 Corinthians 10:24 (NLT)

Loving and Compassionate God,

Save me from any self-centered tendency in me that would cause me to consider only that which is good for me!

Too often I make decisions according to what I think is best for me—with little thought to making those decisions based on what is good for others.

Help me to think about myself less, so I can think more about the people that You divinely place in my path—and what I might do that would be best for them.

Today, grant me opportunities to be more self-sacrificial—and help me to be willingly obedient to Your Spirit’s promptings, so that Christ may be glorified in me.

Save me from any self-centered tendency in me that would cause me to consider only that which is good for me!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

In Humility Value Others

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)

Heavenly Father,

Save me from my own self-centeredness and any impure, attention-seeking motive in me—so that I might walk in true humility, thinking of others before myself.

Help me not to be selfish—always looking at everything to see what’s in it for me, rather than how it might be an opportunity for me to be a part of what You are doing to benefit others.

Help me not to try vainly to impress others, but simply just do all I can to please You—as by faith I follow Your will, plan and purpose for me in each and every moment You give me.

Keep me humble before You and before others—and help me to value them above myself, so that I am never found to be arrogant, irritable or unapproachable.

Help me not to look out for my own interests alone—but make my first effort to look out for the interests of others, with the love of Christ.

Save me from my own self-centeredness and any impure, attention-seeking motive in me—so that I might walk in true humility, thinking of others before myself.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Lead Me, Lord!

May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ.

—2 Thessalonians 3:5 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Lead my heart that I would come into a full understanding of Your love and then be able to express that same love to others—with the patient endurance that comes from Christ.

Help me each day to come to understand Your love more—by granting me insights into its mysteries and ever deeper revelations of its wondrous and healing power.

Let my deepening understanding of Your unfailing love cause my heart to change toward others—so that I can fully express Your love to them, as my own.

Let Your love’s patient endurance live in me—a manifestation of Christ in my life—so that all will see You and give You the glory and honor that You are due.

Lead my heart that I would come into a full understanding of Your love and then be able to express that same love to others—with the patient endurance that comes from Christ.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Show Me My Heart

The heart is deceitful above all things,
    and desperately sick;
    who can understand it?
“I the LORD search the heart
    and test the mind,
to give every man according to his ways,
according to the fruit of his deeds.”

—Jeremiah 17:9-10 (ESV)

O LORD, who searches my heart,

Show me my heart and reveal the true motives in my mind, so that I won’t be led astray by any deceitfulness within me.

Help me to understand that to trust my heart is to trust in man—and that You have warned me against trusting in man. Help me to put all my trust in You alone!

Heal my heart and purify my mind, so that Your thoughts and ways will be made known to me and reflected in all my thoughts, words, and actions.

May love be my only motive for the choices I make—love for You and love for others—so that Your perfect will for me would be accomplished, and Your goodness and mercy would overtake me.

Show me my heart and reveal the true motives in my mind, so that I won’t be led astray by any deceitfulness within me.

In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
