Still On The Path

Who among you fears the Lord
    and obeys his servant?
If you are walking in darkness,
    without a ray of light,
trust in the Lord
    and rely on your God.
But watch out, you who live in your own light
and warm yourselves by your own fires.
This is the reward you will receive from me:
You will soon fall down in great torment.

—Isaiah 50:10-11 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

When darkness closes in around me and it seems like there is no light left from You for me to follow, help me to trust You still—in those darkest hours—until Your light shines brightly once more for me and I can clearly see the perfect path You have had me on, all along.

Help me always to put my trust in You alone—out of recognition of Your goodness to me, Your unlimited and all sufficient power, and in awe of Your majesty and unfailing love for me—as I entrust my life to Christ’s care and control, through my obedience to his commands.

Keep me from following after those who walk in darkness, who try in vain to kindle their own light in order to find their way through this life—who put their confidence in themselves and strike out to make their own way, relying only in the sputtering and faltering sparks of light that they produce.

Keep me from falling in with those who find their momentary warmth and comfort in the passing pleasures of this world, in the fleeting happiness of their possessions, and in seductive emotions of their lusts—whose torment is in the fear of losing that which they cannot possibly hold onto and whose ultimate end is eternal death.

Keep me from allowing the darkness that surrounds me to rob me of the hope of the light that is coming for me.

When darkness closes in around me and it seems like there is no light left from You for me to follow, help me to trust You still—in those darkest hours—until Your light shines brightly once more for me and I can clearly see the perfect path You have had me on, all along.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
