To Live At Peace With Others

Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor;
     only fools insist on quarreling.

—Proverbs 20:3 (NLT)

Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate,
    so stop before a dispute breaks out.

—Proverbs 17:14 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

The time we are given here on earth is short—so may I always look for ways to live at peace with others.

How can You use me to reach others with Your love, if I foolishly choose to live in strife with them? Aren’t my attacks against them and my defense of myself only going to result in greater distance between us?  And in that distance, how will we ever come to a resolution of our differences and a restoration of the peaceful relationship that You desire for us to have?

So help me to move my pride aside—stop making it all about myself—and allow You to truly work in and through me to reach out to others with Your love, so I can bring honor to You and peace to my life.

Let my first impulse be to quench every spark of contention, as I stand guard against the foolishness of giving into any temptation to fight—which would only open a floodgate of trouble upon myself.

Help me always to walk in Your ways—so that I might stop each dispute, even before it begins.

The time we are given here on earth is short—so may I always look for ways to live at peace with others.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
