Being Quick And Slow

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.  Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.

—James 1:19-20 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Help me to be quick to choose to listen—that I might truly understand others—slow to speak—that I may not harm anyone with my words—and slow to get angry—that I might not lose control of my emotions and disappoint You.

In every conversation I have, let me listen first to what Your Spirit would have to say to me—that I might know, speak, and do only that which is pleasing to You.

Before every opportunity I have to speak, let me always make sure that I have sought to hear and understand others—more than I have sought to speak and advise.

In every situation I find myself, help me to control my emotions—so that I don’t become foolishly angry and fail to produce the righteousness that You desire.

Help me to be quick to choose to listen—that I might truly understand—slow to speak—that I may not harm anyone with my words—and slow to get angry—that I might not lose control of my emotions and disappoint You.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
