But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.—James 1:22-25 (NLT)
Heavenly Father,
Help me not only to listen to the Truth of Your Word, but also receive the Truth of Your Word into my heart and apply the Truth of Your Word to my life, by my careful and willing obedience to Your instruction.
Save me from the self-deception
that I am accomplishing something good when I merely listen to Your Word, but then
simply walk away—failing to embrace and apply the instructions that You have
placed there for my benefit.
Help me always to approach
Your Word carefully and with proper reverence for the power of the Truth that
it holds—Truth that invites me to live in the abundant blessings of liberty.
Help me to invest the time
to look carefully into the perfect law that sets me free that I might
understand and do what it says—being careful to remember what I have heard—so I
can walk in the freedom of those blessings that you have waiting for those who
obey.
Help me not only to listen to the Truth of Your Word, but also receive the Truth of Your Word into my heart and apply the Truth of Your Word to my life, by my careful and willing obedience to Your instruction.
In the name of Jesus,
Amen.
