What are Human Beings?

O LORD, what are human beings that you should notice them,
mere mortals that you should think about them?

For they are like a breath of air;
their days are like a passing shadow.

—Psalm 144:3-4 (NLT)

O LORD, Our Father in Heaven,

Out the vastness of all that You have created, You choose not only to notice us, but to pour out over us Your mercy, grace, and love, in abundance!  Such things are too great for me to ever fully understand—and yet I believe!

What is it about human beings—mere mortals—that You should pay us any attention, that You should set Your thoughts on any one of us?  And why would a holy, righteous, and just God want anything to do with me?

The answer lies somewhere in the truth that though You are holy, righteous, and just, You are also equally merciful, gracious, and loving.  It is the completeness of Your perfect character that has chosen to call us into relationship with You.

You have loved us, chosen us, called us, and wanted us in this intimate relationship with You so that we could be made perfect in Christ—and so we would show forth the glories of our God to all the world with our lives!

So, though I may not see or fully understand Your plans and purposes for my short life, may I submit myself to Your Will in all things—trusting in Your great love for me—and love You back as a reflection of all the love I have been given.

Out of the vastness of all that You have created, You choose not only to notice us, but to pour out over us Your mercy, grace, and love, in abundance!  Such things are too great for me to ever fully understand—and yet I believe!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Whatever You Would Like

“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”

—Matthew 7:12 (NLT)

Dear Heavenly Father,

Help me to prove my love for You, by loving others in the same way that I would want to be loved—in the same way that I have been loved by You.

Help me to see that how I want others to treat me goes far beyond merely wanting them to refrain from hurting me. Help me to recognize how much I desire to be truly seen and not ignored, heard and well understood, and sincerely loved despite all my failures and shortcomings—as evidenced by what others say to me and about me, and by their actions toward me.

Then, help me always look for opportunities to actively do those good things for others, just as I would want them to do for me—with the pure motive of a sincere heart that wants what You want for all Your children.

Just as You have poured over me Your immeasurable love, according to Your patience, compassion, kindness, goodness, gentleness, mercy, and grace, let me pour out all these things on others—as You empower me by Your Spirit to fulfill the law of Christ.

Help me to prove my love for You, by loving others in the same way that I would want to be loved—in the same way that I have been loved by You.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

The Work of Your Hand

But now, O L
ORD, You are our Father,
We are the clay, and You our potter;
And all of us are the work of Your hand.

Isaiah 64:8 (NASB)

Heavenly Father,

Like a skilled potter patiently fashions his lump of clay according to his plans, continue to make me into that uniquely original vessel which is perfectly suited for Your purposes and divinely marked for all to see—a product of Your gentle, loving hand, who bears within himself the image of his Maker.

It is You, O LORD, who has created me and given me life—and it is to You that I owe my life and my existence—so mold me as You will and make me Your very own!

With gentleness and patience, remove from me that which does not reflect Your long-planned purposes for my life—and smooth away any rough edges, so that I would become all that You intend for me to become, according to Your perfect design.

To those areas where I am vulnerable to failure, those places where I am weak, add the strength of Your grace—as You help me to seek out, and more fully depend on, the power of Your presence in my life to lead me through.

According to that same marvelous grace which You pour out over me, let others see Your hand at work in me and through me—that they may also want to know intimately the One who uniquely and masterfully crafted them to carry His image for His good purposes.

Like a skilled potter patiently fashions his lump of clay according to his plans, continue to make me into that uniquely original vessel which is perfectly suited for Your purposes and divinely marked for all to see—a product of Your gentle, loving hand, who bears within himself the image of his Maker.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

God Who Takes Care of Me

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

—Philippians 4:19 (NLT)

Provider God,

All thanks be to You, for You are always faithful to take care of me—to supply all my needs according to Your glorious riches in Christ Jesus!

Because of Your faithfulness, and out of Your unfailing love for me, I have always had everything that I needed to be able to carry out Your plans and purposes for me—and so it shall be for the rest of my days.

Never let me forget that the supplying of my needs is not according to any of the limited resources that I can see here in the natural, but rather, according to the supernatural and inexhaustible supply of Your glorious riches—prepared for us who have found our life in Christ Jesus.

Help me to be faithful to carry this message of hope to others—that this same abundant and glorious supply is available to all who believe and have received the redemptive gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

All thanks be to You, for You are always faithful to take care of me—to supply all my needs according to Your glorious riches in Christ Jesus!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

To Come Like a Child

“I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”

—Mark 10:15 (NLT)

Loving Father God,

Teach me how to come to You like a child, that I might enter into all that You have for me—both in the here-and-now, and for all eternity to come.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike humility—knowing that I have only my heart to offer You and that I can do no good thing apart from You.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike dependence—knowing I am helpless and hopeless without You, but that even still, I can find my help and hope in You.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike inquisitiveness—that I might gain knowledge, grow in wisdom, and leave behind my foolish ways.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike faith—asking confidently for Your best for me and believing You will give me every good thing You have for me.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike obedience—willingly going and doing that which You require of me, knowing You always have my best interests at heart.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike gratefulness—giving thanks and rejoicing in all situations for all Your goodness, knowing You work all things together for my good.

Teach me how to come to You with childlike love—a love that is purely motivated and freely offered, just because of who You are.

Teach me how to come to You like a child—that I might enter into all that You have for me, both in the here-and-now, and for all eternity to come.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

The Salt

“You are the salt of the earth.  But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor?  Can you make it salty again?  It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”  —Matthew 5:13 (NLT)

Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!                                                            —Psalm 34:8 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Do not let me ever forget the calling that Christ placed on my life to be the salt of the earth—so that others may also taste and see that You are good and find the joy that comes when they take their refuge in You!

Help me to guard against losing my saltiness—that flavor my life in Christ brings to the world.  For without Christ, my life would be good for nothing and left to be trampled under the feet of a carelessly bustling world.

Help me to remember that in order to remain salty, I desperately need to invest my time in being in Your Presence, learning from Your Word and being taught by Your Spirit—as I pray, search the Bible, and sit quietly before You to hear what the Spirit would have to say to my life and circumstances—so that when You add me into the mix of this day, I will be in a position to improve its flavor.

So, fill me with the deep and unfailing love of Christ, until it overflows from within me by the power of the Holy Spirit—so that the flavor of every thought that I have, of every word that I speak, and of every action I take, will be made alive—having been seasoned with genuine compassion, patient kindness, fresh and daily-renewed mercy, freely-offered forgiveness, and abundant grace.

Do not let me ever forget the calling that Christ placed on my life to be the salt of the earth—so that others may also taste and see that You are good and find the joy that comes when they take their refuge in You.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

The Only God I Serve!

You must not have any other god but me.

   —Exodus 20:3 (NLT)

For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.

   —John 12:43 (NLT)

O LORD, My GOD,

Be the only God I serve!  Help me to care only about the praise I get from You—as I trust You to show me how to think about things, to tell me what I should say, and to make me certain of everything You want me to do.

Don’t allow me to be moved by what others may think—but only be moved by what You would say to me, through Your Word and by Your Spirit—so I can be set free from the bondage that I put myself in, when I try to please others.  For You are the only One who fully knows the plans You have for me.

Don’t allow me to exalt what I may think over what You think—so that I don’t allow my own thoughts to move me away from Your very best for me.  Keep me aware that my heart can and will deceive me—tainting my motives, making me prideful—and may work to push You from Your rightful place within me.

Don’t allow me to have any other gods before you—whether it be people, things, ideas, or even myself.  Let there only be one throne in my heart, reserved for You.  May You be pleased with me as I put all my faith in You—as I walk in step with You in freedom!

Be the only God I serve!  Help me to care only about the praise I get from You—as I trust You to show me how to think about things, to tell me what I should say, and to make me certain of everything You want me to do.

In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Walk in Wisdom

Those who trust in themselves are fools,
but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.

Proverbs 28:26 (NIV)

Heavenly Father,

Save me from the foolishness of trusting in myself and help me to walk as a wise man—with my eyes fixed on You and with a heart that beats only after Your own heart!

Don’t allow me to start believing that my thoughts are necessarily wise just because I think them, or that my own strength and power is sufficient to carry me, or that my own actions could ever be enough to justify me before You.

Keep me ever close to You—and help me to remember that the times that I am most likely to be deceived by the enemy are those times when I have foolishly wandered from Your Holy Presence.

Make me wise enough to put all my trust in You—in Your power at work in me, in Your promises given to me, and in Your unfailing love for me—the One who is faithful to keep safe all those who wisely humble themselves and step forward in faith, to walk with the One who is mighty to save!

Save me from the foolishness of trusting in myself and help me to walk as a wise man—with my eyes fixed on You and with a heart that beats only after Your own heart!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prove That You Have!

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.

Matthew 3:8 (NLT)

Father God,

May the way that I live be evidence of my repentance for my sins—my decision to leave my old ways behind, to turn and run to You.

Save me from the hypocrisy of claiming that I have repented of my sins, when there is no visible proof of my claim to be found in the way that I live my life.

Instead, help me show others—by the way I live my life—that I have been changed, been set apart to do Your will, and that I am submitted to Your plan and purpose for my life.

Let the best evidence of this change in me be seen in the way that I love others—with all the compassion, kindness, patience, mercy, forgiveness, and grace that can only come through Christ.

May the way that I live be evidence of my repentance for my sins—my decision to leave my old ways behind, to turn and run to You.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

God is My Salvation

“Behold, God is my salvation,
I will trust and not be afraid;
For the L
ORD GOD is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.”

Isaiah 12:2 (NASB)

LORD GOD Almighty,

You are my strength and song—the One who saves me in every way! I choose to trust You and not be afraid!

With wide-eyed wonder and an ever-grateful heart, I declare that You are my salvation—not only because of the saving work of grace that was accomplished through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus, but also because of the place of perfect peace and safety You have reserved and called me to in Him.

Knowing what You did for me, how can I still be afraid?  How can I not believe that You will take care of every temporal need while I am here—working all things for my good because of Your great love for me—until You take me to my forever home with You?

Help me to always reflect Your faithfulness to me—by my consistent obedience to Your Word and Your Spirit—as I put all my hope and faith in You for the continuing salvation that You have promised to me.

Be my strength—flooding the void of my weakness with Your sustaining power—equipping me in every way for every battle of faith that comes along the path upon which You have set me.

Be my song—overwhelming my spirit with Your Holy Spirit—so that the music of my life would be one of continual praise and thanksgiving for all You have done, and uninterrupted worship for all that You are.

You are my strength and song—the One who saves me in every way! I choose to trust You and not be afraid!

In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

My Darkness Into Light!

You, L
ORD, keep my lamp burning;

my God turns my darkness into light.

—Psalm 18:28 (NIV)

Light of my life,

May the oil of Your Holy Spirit always keep the light of my lamp burning brightly—illuminating me from within and turning my darkness into glorious light!

When I begin to allow my troubles and trials to overwhelm me, pour out again the oil of Your Holy Spirit within me to keep my lamp burning—to comfort my spirit with hope and lead me forth in peace.

When I find it hard to see the way which You would have me go, help me step out in faith and believe that You will lead me, as You make the way clear before me—lighting each next step along Your path for me.

Cause my lamp, which is the Light of Christ, to shine so brightly within me, that it drives out all the darkness hidden there. And make that same Light shine through me, to touch a dark world that so desperately needs to know the joy of Your Presence and the depth of Your love for them.

May the oil of Your Holy Spirit always keep the light of my lamp burning brightly—illuminating me from within and turning my darkness into glorious light!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

If We Could

Indeed, we all make many mistakes.  For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

James 3:2 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Save me from the many sinful mistakes I make when I carelessly open my mouth. Help me control my tongue, so that I might be made perfect in You.

Keep me from gossiping. Help me never to say anything about a person behind their backs, that I would not say—with love—to their face. Don’t let me taint the reputation of another with the negative things I might say. Help me build others up, not tear them down.

Keep me from using my tongue to exaggerate, flatter, or exchange the truth for a lie—knowing that the motive behind each of these is manipulation. And help me to speak the truth in love—from a pure motive of reflecting Christ’s love for us all.

Keep me from complaining—since complaining drives gratefulness and joy out of my heart and robs me of my very life. And help me to be thankful—in all situations—for the blessings You so richly pour out on my life.

Keep me from boasting—except when I testify to what You have done in my life. Help me to be humble—since I know any good thing found in me is all because of You and is only given to me that I might bring You glory.

Remind me that in order to bring You glory, I must know when to speak, where to speak, how to speak, and understand why I should speak—just as much as I need to know what to speak.

Save me from the many sinful mistakes I make when I carelessly open my mouth. Help me control my tongue, so that I might be made perfect in You.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

The Good Stored Up in My Heart

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.  For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

—Luke 6:45 (NIV)

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.  Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

—Philippians 4:8 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Help me to become a better reflection of Your goodness—someone who chooses to fill his heart only with that which is good—so that whatever overflows from my heart and across my lips will always bring You glory!

Let those things I have stored up in my heart be those things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise—so that the life I live will be a pleasing offering to You and be a source of blessing to those around me.

Help me not to allow any evil thoughts, or the lies of the enemy, to have any place in my heart—for if I allow them to remain, they will corrupt the good treasure of my heart, and pollute and poison every part of me.

Through Your Word, and by Your Spirit, continue to fill my heart with Your Love and Truth—until I overflow with all things good, and become that faithful representative of my Lord, Jesus Christ, that You have called me to be.

Help me to become a better reflection of Your goodness—someone who chooses to fill his heart only with that which is good—so that whatever overflows from my heart and across my lips will always bring You glory!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
