“You must not have any other god but me.”—Exodus 20:3 (NLT)
“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say,‘You must worship the Lord your God
and serve only him.’”—Matthew 4:20 (NLT)
Almighty God,
Be for me the only god I serve!
Help me to understand that
I am always in danger of allowing the things of this world to take Your rightful
place in my heart.
Help me to see that I do
this when I begin to take my own identity, purpose and source of security from
the things of this world—such as wealth, position, authority, power, fame, and
pleasure—instead of from who You say
that I am in Christ.
Help me to guard against
allowing my foolish pride to make a god of myself,
a desire for wealth or possessions to make money
a god in my eyes, or a desire to enjoy life to make pleasure a god that I would follow.
Help me to remember that
Satan would tempt me to make gods of anything in this world that I would value
or love, fear or serve, delight in or depend on, more than You.
Help me to come against
the temptation to serve any other god with the truth of Your Word—just as Jesus
did—and send Satan on his way.
Be for me the only god I serve!
In the name of Jesus,
Amen.
