Your Grace Alone

My old self has been crucified with Christ.  It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.  So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless.  For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.

—Galatians 2:20-21 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

May I never forget that it was Your grace alone—Your unmerited favor poured out on me—that saved me from my sin.

Help me to remember that because—by faith—I have accepted the salvation You provided for me—by Your grace to me—my old sinful nature no longer has control over me, but it was nailed to the cross with Jesus and has died.

And now that my old self has died, Christ has come to live in me so that my life—the life I live in this body—is lived by trusting in Him, the only one worthy to pay the price for my sin by dying for me.

Help me always remember that there is nothing that I could ever do to earn the right to salvation—because if there was something I could do to earn it, then Christ would have died for no reason.

Help me never to treat Your grace as meaningless, but always remember the terrible price that was paid to set me free from the power of sin over my life.

May I never forget that it was Your grace alone—Your unmerited favor poured out on me—that saved me from my sin.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Following Instructions For Freedom

I will keep on obeying your instructions
    forever and ever.
I will walk in freedom,
for I have devoted myself to your commandments.

—Psalm 119:14-16 (NLT)

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the freedom that You make available to me as I carefully obey Your instructions.

Help me always to look at the instructions You give in Your Word as pathways that lead to my freedom—pathways which You have graciously placed before me for my own good.

Help me to see that obedience to Your commandments and instructions does not inhibit me or restrain me, but rather allows me the freedom to become the person that You designed me to be all along—and keeps me from the consequences that come when I willfully or ignorantly disobey You.

Help me to see I can only be free to fulfill Your plan for my life as I commit to know and follow Your instructions now and forever.

Thank You for the freedom that You make available to me as I carefully obey Your instructions.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

No Other God

“You must not have any other god but me.”

—Exodus 20:3 (NLT)

“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say,
‘You must worship the Lord your God
    and serve only him.’”

—Matthew 4:20 (NLT)

Almighty God,

Be for me the only god I serve!

Help me to understand that I am always in danger of allowing the things of this world to take Your rightful place in my heart.

Help me to see that I do this when I begin to take my own identity, purpose and source of security from the things of this world—such as wealth, position, authority, power, fame, and pleasure—instead of from who You say that I am in Christ.

Help me to guard against allowing my foolish pride to make a god of myself, a desire for wealth or possessions to make money a god in my eyes, or a desire to enjoy life to make pleasure a god that I would follow.

Help me to remember that Satan would tempt me to make gods of anything in this world that I would value or love, fear or serve, delight in or depend on, more than You.

Help me to come against the temptation to serve any other god with the truth of Your Word—just as Jesus did—and send Satan on his way.

Be for me the only god I serve!

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
